Brakeman-KingPOST 336 NEWS
APRIL / MAY / JUNE 2009 ISSUE
EDITOR: Violet Cooley - Post -
Commander's Corner.... Greetings, How is my extended family? First of all, I wish to thank all members for the positive comments on the previous newsletter and recognize the purpose that it serves. It is an excellent source of information for upcoming events. Any member who wishes to write a comment or article in the newsletter is welcome to do so. We will use the power of suggestion as a guide to gather new ideas, different opinions and, if necessary, CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. Once again, we remain a Post of 100% membership. Our First Vice has done a fine job in reaching that goal and with the continued cooperation of our Legion members, that goal will remain intact. Ok, I will take my raccoon hat off for that! Another note: PLEASE REMEMBER, GENERAL ELECTION IS IN MAY AND THE COMMANDER POSITION IS AVAILABLE. I WILL GLADLY TRAIN YOU ON ALL OF THE GREAT BENEFITS OF BEING POST COMMANDER OF 336! UNTIL THEN, I WILL CONTINUE TO DO MY JOB AND ASSIST OTHERS, IF NEEDED. Next note: We must continue to support our ladies Auxiliary and be the backbone to the Son's of the American Legion. Our natural ability is to participate in all areas of concern which are vital to our positive existence. We, as a whole, have determined that our devotion to mutual helpfulness is the key and we ultimately see what good comes from it every time. Now, as we move forward in 2009, the vision of where we want to be as a Post remains within reach. As your present Commander, it appears that we know what we have to do and how to complete the task at hand. This action empowers us and gives us motivation. It is the result of our efforts that retains us to perform our duties diligently. Keeping true to ourselves, having a strong sense of value, a true knowledge of citizenship, patriotism and an understanding that we are a part of the solution to the unresolved issues that this world faces. Our service in the community and our ability to extend a hand to those in need, continues to be excellent! We will continue to take care of our Veterans and their families, which ultimately reminds us of our major purpose. In 2009, we will form a committee to address crucial areas of health awareness. One area of concern includes the formation of a walking program. Various clinics will be on hand to discuss many health issues, such as hypertension. Finally, for the good of the Legion, please continue to visit your American Legion, often and soon. It is the American Legion Way!
God Bless to All

THEY ARE VERY IMPORTANT AND ANY SUGGESTIONS OR IDEAS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME.
- Auxiliary -
Spring is just around the corner and we hope to be having a few fun events for everyone. The children's Easter Party will be held Saturday, April 4th in the pavilion. Sign up sheets have been posted in the canteen. Our fish fries continue through April 10th. Thank you all for your support with our dinners. The Auxiliary has been serving breakfast on Sundays bi-weekly (alternating with the Sons), since January. We will be doing breakfasts until Father's Day and then will shut down for the summer. Fathers day breakfast will be free to Post (Dad) members. As some of you might know we had to cancel our February reverse raffle. We rescheduled the raffle for June 13th. It will be held in the pavilion from 5 to 8 PM, and will be a "Barbeque Raffle" with possible dancing and fun after the drawing. We will also be hosting several dinners during the next three months, so check your calendars for the menu. Our nominations for officers will be held at our April meeting with elections in May, If you are interested in holding an office please plan to attend. This year we are sending 10 girls to Buckeye Girls State. This is the most we have sent in a long time. This is a great opportunity for these girls to learn about our government first hand. I would like to close saying that we continue to pray for our troops and their families. Hopefully most of our troops will be coming home soon.

As winter is behind us and we are looking forward to the spring and summer weather, I just want to thank everyone for their support. Our dinners have been very good ...... and I know we will keep up the good work. I would like to give special thanks to all the S.A.L., that have made our dinners successful. I would like to thank everyone who helped with our fundraiser for Spanky. It was very successful. We have another reverse raffle soon and tickets will be on sale, so don't miss out on the fun. Also elections for officers for the new year are coming up, so make sure you come to the meeting to vote on the officers. Our May Convention is in Cincinnati, Ohio. Hope to see a strong showing there from our Post. On another note, I would like to close by asking everyone to say a prayer for our troops overseas and around the world, for their safe return home to their families and friends.

S.A.L. Commander I am proud to say that we are at 93% of our membership goal. We still have time to make 100%. We only need 12 membership cards to make 100%. I do believe we can make it. I left a list of Sons that had not paid their dues for 2009 on the wall between the restrooms. Please, if you see someone you know, call them up and see why they have not paid their dues. If they are going through hard times, let me know and we can work something out for them. Membership is the key factor for our well being. We welcome all new members as well. I would like to take this time to say that Charles Stennis, the First Vice for the Post, has done a great job. The Post is over 100% membership for 2009. Great job! Also, I would like to say Thank you to our Veterans and all of our members as well.
God Bless the USA

- Junior Activities -
As some of you may know, we now have an active Juniors group. We have only had two meetings, but we have already had nominations and elections of officers. Hopefully these girls are having fun along with helping out the community. We are scheduling a tour of the new Fire Station on Fairport Nursery Road. This is part of safety training. We will also be doing some community projects with the local nursing and assisted living homes. We are also the group that has the coupon donation box out at the Post to collect coupons to send to families overseas. So far we have sent $304.00 worth of coupons. So if you could clip and safe your coupons, we go through them monthly to send them along. Some of the girls have been helping with the Auxiliary dinners. So, if you have a daughter or granddaughter who might be interested, please contact me at 440-567-5093. The age limit is 18 and the dues are $10.
Thank you,
Cheryl Galayda Junior Leader

The warmer months are around the corner and with them come loads of dinners, entertainment events, and once again a full calendar that will keep us busy. The sons and ladies are each having reverse raffles, so make sure to get your tickets ahead of time. Larry is doing another lip sync contest, and as of now our pavilion is open for any parties you want to schedule. The dates are filling up quick so give me a call for whatever party you have in mind. I don't know how to thank everyone that participated in the fundraiser for Sam Montz. Members and guests flooded our post with contributions, raffle items and food. The money raised went way past anything we anticipated. This event started out being something I thought I could handle, and turned out to be way past my capabilities. Our commander kept telling me the doers will step in and make the event the success it was, and as always they did. Thank you so much for being there for Sam, and I apologize for driving you all crazy. This event became more than anything money could buy. It was the purest form of fellowship I have ever witnessed. May you all be blessed for your efforts, support and the memories made by this tribute for Sam. God bless our troops and our members, Susan "Corky" Tipton
