Commander's Corner....

Greetings!

Legionnaires, Auxiliary and Sal's, fall is here and summer is fading. We have been busy at the Post creating an environment where all are welcome. We encourage you to step up and get involved in our many Legion programs or just visit our Canteen and enjoy fellowship with our members and guests.

In the past I have been confronted by members with a multitude of issues and so called problems. I have found that many of these issues have been motivated with personal agenda's that are not for the Good of the Legion. Some unhappy members come in with negativity that repeats over and over again. Unfortunately they go to other clubs and complain about our Post, yet they continue to renew their membership. Our post must be doing some-thing right as our membership is at 100%. If they could take that negative energy and use it for the Good of the Legion we would be unstoppable.

Thankfully most all our members believe in our club and I thank God for those members every day. I would also like to thank all the members that made our Post Picnic a grand success. I haven't seen such a large crowd for a few years. I was happy to see so many familiar faces at this function. Once again I say our club is only as good as its members and that was reflected at our Post picnic.

Over this summer we lost one of our senior leaders, friend to all, past commander and honorable soldier Frank Smolinski whom was an asset to our community. With the support of our officers in honor of Frank, we have created a Spirit Award on his behalf. As many well know the flag was Frank's number one Old Glory. This award will be given to the Post member or non-member by way of nominations. We will have nomination forms at the Post for your convenience. To get the Spirit award in motion I am looking for members in good standing to be part of a committee to review the nominations. If you are interested in participating in the committee see our Historian, Al Rein.

I hope by the time these few lines reach you that you all are in good health and spirit.

God Bless the American Legion and our Troops.

Derrick Abney, Commander

PLEASE TRY TO ATTEND THE POST, SAL, OR AUXILIARY MEETINGS.
THEY ARE VERY IMPORTANT AND ANY SUGGESTIONS OR IDEAS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME.

- Auxiliary -

It's October and already our too short summer is gone. Well, on to fall and some of the things the Auxiliary has planned. Of course we will be holding some dinners for the next three months. Check your calendar for the menu and dates. Your patronage is greatly appreciated as the proceeds from our dinners benefit our veterans and local charities at the end of the year. Our children's Halloween Party will be held on Saturday, October 24th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. The children's Christmas Party will be on Saturday, December 19th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. As always signs and sign-up sheets will be posted for you to register your children. And don't forget the pot luck adult parties on these evenings. Please remember our parties are for children 12 and under. Diane Buchs will be hosting a Browns/Steelers Tailgate Party on Sunday, October 18th from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM at the post pavilion. The proceeds will benefit the "Adopt-a-family" program. This will be a raffle with all the trimmings...food, draft beer raffles and a $25 cash prize for the best dressed Browns and Steelers tailgater. Tickets are only $10.00 with a grand prize of $1000.00. Whether you're a Browns or Steelers fan, it sounds like fun! Hope you can attend! A ticket is required for admission.

We started our annual holiday food drive at the post picnic. Non-perishable, un-expired items or cash donation can be left in the box at the post. Please help us provide a meal for the holidays to those in need. Thanks to all who helped make our post picnic a success. We will continue to pray for and support our troops.

Cora Duruttya
Auxiliary President

- S.A.L. -

Well, summer has come and gone and the holidays are approaching us fast. I like to thank everyone who has supported the Son's dinners.

Rex and I had a chance to travel to Louisville for the National Convention. I sure was surprised at the city and the people there. If anyone gets a chance to attend one of these conventions, I would recommend it. I would also like give a hand to Keith and the guys who have been doing these dinners, as they really work hard to make them a success.

In closing, I would like to wish everyone Happy Holidays.

S.A.L. Commander
Willie Wilson

It is that time of year when membership dues are ready to be paid for 2010. We are taking 2010 dues now. Membership is very important for us as well as for the American Legion family. I will be happy to take your 2010 dues for this year. I did make a bet with Charles Stennis, the First Vice Commander for the Legion, that we will be at 100% before them, so please help me show him that we will take care of business. Right now our membership is at 30% for this year. Lets get our membership dues paid up for 2010. If there is a question concerning membership, please contact the First Vice's of our Post for answers.

I would like to take this time to say thanks to Keith Bell, our Second Vice, for doing a great job. Bob Hearn, thanks as well for doing a great job as our Historian. If you did not know, Bob won three awards from the State at convention in May. Great job! We have a great SAL Unit at our Post and to all "Great job!"

In closing, please say a prayer for our troops and their families that are serving us and our great land. God Bless America.

Rex Buchs, S.A.L. 1st Vice

- Canteen -
revised 10/1/2009

Summer is near its end, with the holidays around the corner. The Auxiliary, Sons and Post have many dinners and events planned for its members. Woody, Dave and Mary Taylor Brooks will be entertaining us through the next three months. We have a Halloween Party for the kids and adults. Woody will be here the night before Thanksgiving to play Karoke and Keith will have pulled pork sandwiches to give you all some extra energy to dance the night away. The Sons are having a Poor Mans Raffle in December and the next week we will be having our Christmas party for the kids and adults. We will then wind down the year with Woody playing on New Years Eve, so remember to check the dates on your calendar so you don’t miss the fun.

I try to always keep my letter upbeat but we have some situations that need to be resolved. I’ve been here for almost seven years and am worried for our club. I have never received so many personal visits from members and phone calls as I have in the past couple months. Many rumors are surfacing and petty complaints have a lot of our members upset. The most dangerous rumors of all are the ones mixed with a combination of truths with untruths for someone own personal agenda. This is meant to confuse and it does, but when the truth does surface all it does is ruin the credibility of the person that started it.

Many bartenders have requested that the conversations at the bar be limited to fellowship. It’s difficult for them to deal with the downfall of arguments they can hear brewing and hard to focus on the many things they do when they hear members specking badly about our Post or its members, it’s a distraction they don’t need deal with. They are working hard to serve customers not mediate trouble talk, so if you have a problem you wish to discuss take it to the dining area away from those who wish not to become involved.

If you have a problem with someone please have the courage to go them directly. State your opinion with respect. If you still don’t agree don’t reargue the situation, just know you have planted a seed for them to think over. Most times if you walk away with integrity you can resolve the problem at a later time. Ending this issue on a positive note I have noticed an improvement since the beginning of September, so hopefully we are getting back on track, I just felt I had to address this problem so we can all have a positive awareness of our behavior.

As always it is your right to speak to an officer at any time with your complaints ,just remember their time is valuable. They work, have their own bussiness and families to contend with. They have earned your respect and patience so don’t be upset if they can’t resolve your complaint instantaneously. There are proper procedures to follow to make sure everyone involved is treated fairly.

I will use our Commander as an example of valuable time, only because I sometimes help him with communication with the organizations he is affiliated with. Our Commander alone gives his time to The Unity in the Community, Americanism for student government testing, Veteran Foreign Wars, Morse Ave Block Watch and The Miracle Revival Ministry helping the homeless. Also every time I visit someone in the hospital he is there visiting members or fellow veterans. All our other officers do the same and have their organization they participate in to help to boost our club, so please give them the respect they have earned and deserve. This is why it is upsetting to them if they hear someone talking badly about the Post they put their hearts and souls into.

Please don’t be so quick to judge. God is busy keeping our scores. Let us be more concerned about his vision of us, than our vision of others. Be only quick to help and even quicker to forgive. As Doctor Phil says. “Every situation needs a hero.” There is something good in everyone, work on finding it with compassion and understanding.

I wish our club, its members and families to be of good health and heart for the upcoming holidays. I am also looking forward to seeing some Hero’s.

God Bless our Troop and their families.

Susan "Corky" Tipton
Canteen Manager
