Brakeman-KingPOST 336 NEWS
APRIL / MAY / JUNE 2010 ISSUE
EDITOR: Violet Cooley - Commander's Corner -
Greetings Legionaries, Auxiliary, and Sons Members. Brrrrrr!!! It's been a snowy Ohio winter and I am ready to shed the cabin fever, cold weather and patiently wait till the spring is upon us. With this change of season, let us remember to keep in touch with our faith, as during this time of year we practice and participate in Lent and many other religious beliefs as we keep our faith in Christ. As in the past we need to stay in tune with the goals and continue to identify the issues life brings us by keeping an open mind and a good attitude. Please remember to be thankful and grateful which we will find with patience as it keeps us grounded to our Post. We just started a new award called the Spirit Award on behalf of one of our Past Commanders Frank Smolinski. We will post the details and form a judging committee. Check in with our Post Historian for more details. The state of Ohio Bingo and Charities has picked our Post to host their seminar on legalization of gambling. It's great to see our Post worthy to help out at a State level. We are also proud to continue working with Buckeye Boys and Buckeye Girls State Delegates. It is important to help the youths that will be one day replacing us. It's incredible to see how much this program means to the students. I would also like to thank all officers and members that help with this program. We have come a long way from our past Post. Relationships have been formed and many of us have become better people for learning from each other, if you reflect back on where we were and what odds we overcame on a social level our Post is as good as we can make it for many different reasons. Keep doing what you're doing, to keep our Post such a success. That's how we keep the doors open and the lights on, by sticking together. Post elections are at hand, so if you are a Post member please be part of the solution by being part of our election process. It has been a pleasure to serve as you leader, God bless our Post, its members and all the soldiers that are fighting for our safety, rights and freedom.
Thank you,
Derrick Abney, Commander
PLEASE TRY TO ATTEND THE POST, SAL, OR AUXILIARY MEETINGS.
THEY ARE VERY IMPORTANT AND ANY SUGGESTIONS OR IDEAS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME.

USO CARE PACKAGE PROGRAM: Post 336 is collecting care package items for our troops fighting in Afghanistan and around the world. Items such as bug spray, chap stick, shaving cream, raisins, dried fruit, toothbrushes, magazines, slim jims/beef jerky and more. A complete list of items needed and the collection box is in the pool room at the Post. Please donate one or more items to the USO Care Package Program for these brave men and women fighting in harms way. It only takes a few dollars from you to help those that are keeping us free from terrorism and other threats to our freedom. I am also in charge of Post 336's program of giving certificates to individuals, groups, scouts, students, policemen, firemen and others that show they have excelled at what they do. Post 336 will be giving certificates to: Post 336 Junior Auxiliary, The Village Salon in Mentor, Mentor Senior Center and Concord Color Distributors in Chardon for their many contributions to the USO Care Package Program through Post 336. ATTENTION Members of Post 336. We need your votes to make Lance Corporal David R. Baker, from Painesville Township, an Honorary Member of this Post. Lance Corporal Baker was killed in action in Afghanistan. Please send me an email at HR29A@AOL.COM TO VOTE FOR LANCE CORPORAL BAKER. (or any other positive information that you may have on this matter).
Bob Loomis
3rd Vice Commander
Attention Members
Election of Post, S.A.L. and Auxiliary officers is coming up in the next few months. If you want to nominate or vote in the election, you must be a paid-up member and attend the respective meetings. Please remember to bring your membership card with you.
- Auxiliary -
Spring is here and the Auxiliary is still going strong. We are still participating in Sunday breakfasts, our fish fries have only one left on April 2, which is Good Friday, and we are still having some week-end dinners. We'd like to thank everyone for making our Valentine's Day benefit for our charities a great success. Also, we have gotten a lot of support for our fish fries. We held our children's Easter Party on March 27. It was fun for all. We will be having a few dinners in the next three months, so watch your calendars for the menus. Again, we'd like to thank you all for your support with our functions. District 9 Auxiliary is having a membership drive. Have you paid your 2010 dues yet? If not, please get them to Julia John- son ASAP. Also, if you know someone who is interested in becoming an Auxiliary member, please contact one of our offi- cers, as all new members are very welcome. As always, we continue to pray for our troops and their families. May God Bless.

Auxiliary President
- Auxiliary Chaplain -
Just a short not to remind us that we need to pray for each other, as well as our troops. Let us not be afraid to embrace our members. I believe each member possesses these three qualities: 1) Caring (I Cor.13:4) Love is patient, love is kind...it is not rude, it is not self-seeking 2) honesty (II Cor 8:21) Do what is right not only in the eyes of the Lord, but also in the eyes of men 3) respect (Matt. 7:12) So in everything you do, do unto others what you would have them do to you. I pray that we grow in membership as well as in friendship. It is sad when an organization loses members for known and unknown reasons; however, sometimes we need to purge in order to see growth. I truly believe we have a wonderful post and if we choose to work together, rather than against each other, it will only benefit us.
May the Lord bless you and strengthen your faith.

- S.A.L. -
I would like to start by thanking everyone who supports the sons and our post. We will be having our elections soon and there will be some changes in our officers here. I would like to thank everyone for the support they gave the officers and myself. It has been an honor to be commander for the last two years. It has been a real experience for me, but due to family illness, I won't be running at this time. We will be having our spring conference in May where one of the sons, Rex, will become our State Commander, which will be nice. Congrats Rex! We will also be having a reverse raffle soon, so keep a look out for tickets. I would also like to thank all my officers for a great job these past years. Keep up the good work guys.
Willie Wilson
S.A.L. Commander
- Junior Auxiliary -
Just a word about our newly organized Junior group. We are starting our second year and I would like to give you a run- down of some of the things we did in 2009. We toured the new Painesville Township Fire Department, attended the Poppy Shop last April, made a float for the Mardi Gras parade, held two fundraisers, shopped for the USO twice, donated to Toys For Tots, made Christmas ornaments for the residents along with caroling at a local nursing home and shopped and do- nated food to the local food bank. I feel the girls have done a great job serving their community and our soldiers overseas. On April 11, 2010, we will be attending the Poppy Shop in Sandusky. This year the girls will be participating as "Poppy Prin- cesses". They are very excited about "getting all dressed up" for the parade. This is held in Sandusky next to the Soldiers and Sailors home. Anyone who could come and give support to our girls would be greatly appreciated. It's very interesting, as there is the museum and a tour of the Poppy Shop in which the Veterans make our poppies. Also on April 27, the girls will be hosting a "Big Boy Bite" to raise funds for the USO and a few of our other charities. Please try to attend. The food is very good! In closing I would like to extend an open invitation to any qualifying girl under the age of 18, to join our group. You can get information from the Post at 357-7711 or contact me, Cheryl Galayda, at 567-5093.

- American Legion Riders -
Hello everyone, we are the newest addition to Brakeman-King Post 336. We are made up from members of the Post, SAL and Auxiliary. We all support the same mission and ideas; the only difference is we ride motorcycles. The A.L.R. just held our third meeting and have 7 paid members and an additional 3 that have signed up. We hope to increase our membership as the riding season approaches. For our first bike run we have elected to ride in the Memorial Day Parade. All of the details have not been worked out yet, but as soon as they are we will let you know. The A.L.R. is always looking for new members. There are only a few requirements to become a regular member.
Steve Anderson, A.L.R. Director
